What level of education is required to be a dentist?
Becoming a dentist requires years of studying and training. The first step? Obtaining an undergraduate degree (usually with extremely high grades and in a major that’s heavy in math and science). From there, they must be accepted to an accredited dental school in the U.S. and complete three years of in-classroom and hands-on training. Even after they graduate with either a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or a Doctor of Dental Sciences (DDS) degree, their education is far from over. In order to maintain their license, they need to complete continuing education hours annually.
